C20th Marilyn Monroe

From the 1970s to the present day, Marilyn has been a popular choice with magazine publishers. They know that her image still sells copies ! Most of these magazines were issued by the major British newspapers; free with their Sunday editions.

SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINE: 7th October 1973

A series of images from the last few years of Marilyn's life accompany the final part of a long article which traces her career.

OBSERVER: 11th May 1975

Bill Burnside's photo of Marilyn on the cover, with another, even larger, inside, plus an article by the photographer, and reproduction of a signed pic given to him by the star.

SNARK: 13th June 1977

Warhol's famous image of Monroe appears on the cover of the Harrow Public School magazine. Although mainly an in-house publication, it was available to anyone who cared to subscribe.

YOU: 23rd March 1986

The cover of the Mail on Sunday's magazine, You, is remarkably similar to Mariyn's first American solo cover, for Family Circle, as it uses an image from the same Andre de Dienes session. Three further de Dienes images appear inside, along with a pic of Marilyn in later life, with a short article about this important early session.

OBSERVER: 2nd August 1987

Six photos of Marilyn inside, including three huge 1945 colour shots by her "discoverer", David Conover. Article reviews the Monroe image, on the 25th anniversary of her death.

SUNDAY : 27th November 1994

Superb colour image of Marilyn on the cover of the British News of the World magazine. Inside, nine further photos from the session by Bill Burnside, a former movie executive, with the full story of how and why they were taken, and how he became Monroe's lover.

WEEKEND : 11th September 1999

Great cover pic, and inside a further set of photos with an article about the stories behind her personal objects, then on display in London prior to a New York auction. Weekend is the Daily Mail's Saturday magazine.
